Generally depending upon the
difference in the intellectual levels among the children, it is often a matter of
argument by some people that the pupils in schools should be taught in
accordance with their academic learning abilities. However, this type of
argument sounds good, but only on paper.
It is not advisable to select the
students in the schools according to their academic ability because of various
reasons. This type of system gives the inferiority complex to the students who
are not in the group and sense of superiority to those who are in and selected.
This is harmful to both types of students in the long run in their life.
Secondly, inconsistency in the academic performance of the students is often observed.
For example, an above average student may transform his academic performance to
some higher level and on the other hand chances of transformation in an average
student may be as low as zero. There is very low probability that some weak
students get inspired and may excel if they study together with their bright
counterparts.
On the contrary
this argument dictates that if we separate students according to their learning
ability, better level of enhancement can be achieved than achieved in combined
class. They can be taught extra complex concept to enhance their academic and
intellectual performance. Furthermore, there are chances that they may spoil
their academic prospects if come under influence of spoilt children.
To conclude, this
argument seems appropriate if seen in the light of benefits of intelligent
students.
However, its
harmful effects seem to be more on the student community as it may hurt the
self-esteem of the students and in my view, this cannot be permitted at all
under any circumstances.
